In 1839, he entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris where he studied with Léon Coignet (1794-1865), a historical painter and portrait painter.. Finally, he frequented the studio of Constant Troyon (1810-1865), a landscape and animal painter and his true master.
One of the most famous works of this painter is “The angry people of Jumieges” of 1880, in which the artist made two paintings (preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen and the Museum of Arts in Sydney) after carrying out several studies.
A genre painter and history painter, we owe him numerous paintings illustrating the lives of Gauls and Merovingians. Our study is probably a study for a larger scene.
