This youthful work by the man who would become a major figure in lyrical abstraction is to be included in the corpus of works known as “Character Signs”.
At the end of the war, Olivier Debré adopted a painting made of material in muted colors that he punctuated with his character signs. It was during the 1950s that he abandoned the characters to begin a cycle of landscape signs. Material and color will then cross the canvas with large touches prefiguring the large colored fields of productions in the 1960s.
