Terracotta portrait attributed to Giovani Bastianini. 1830/1868.
Florentine workshop active in the 19th century.
This original terracotta, with a very expressive face, is based on a walnut base. Note traces of polychromy.
Bastianini, a virtuoso sculptor based in Florence, is known for being one of the great pastichers and then forger of Tuscan artists of the 15th century. His works, which entered institutions, were sometimes attributed to Donatello and Verrocchio.
The end of the 19th century in Florence is a period of rediscovery of the Renaissance. Major works undertaken, in particular on Santa Maria Del Fiore, are an opportunity to re-read the history and to add a neo-Gothic facade. The sculptors' workshops thus perpetuate the tradition of Florentine sculpture.
