Bertholle, along with his friends Manessier, Le Moal, and Elvire Jan, was a leading figure of the New School of Paris.
He distinguished himself from the other members of the group by opting for compositions that were often very deliberate and meticulously detailed. Our painting reflects the profound admiration he held, as a young painter, for Paolo Uccello's compositions, notably the Battle of San Romano.
