View of a Port. 1937
mixed media on canvas.
Dimensions: 55X75 cm
Signature and date, lower right. Above the signature, the number 39 corresponds to the number of the painting in its exhibition.
The artist used to apply his numbering directly to the work. A habit that he will abandon later on the advice of his gallery owner.
This painting with deep colors is treated with sgraffito. The colored surface is worked with a tip and a comb.
Roger Toulouse, painter, illustrator and printmaker, had a long career. His beginnings were marked by his meeting and his friendship with Max Jacob.
Our date from this period, even before his first participation in the first Salon des Independants in 1939.
This work is referenced in the Artist's Archives and will appear in the supplement to the Raisoné catalogue.
