Jean Lerat was born on 1st January 1913 in Bourges. After earning his school leaving certificate in 1926, he began an apprenticeship in wood sculpture at the National School of Applied Arts for Industry in Bourges. His sculpture teacher, Noël Feuerstein (1904-1998), a sculptor trained at École Boulle, provided him with a classical and rigorous education. In 1941, Jean Lerat moved to La Borne to learn pottery. His first firings, including that of our vase, took place in Paul Beyer's kiln. With his wife Jacqueline Lerat, he contributed to the renewal of forms in Sacred Art by fulfilling several commissions. Their work subsequently revitalized popular pottery forms. The Lerat couple left behind a significant sculptural body of work whose influence extends beyond the ceramics world.
