Eugene Leroy.
Nude, pencil drawing signed and dated 61.
Dimensions at sight: 46.5x62.5cm.
Eugène Leroy was born in Tourcoing in 1910 and died in Wasquehal in 2000.
This singular artist came to painting through a fascination with ancient masters. All his work will then become a permanent quest for painting.
Very quickly noticed by Gaston Diehl, Pierre Loeb, then Claude Bernard and Michael Werner who were his gallery owners, Leroy's work, taking on more and more material, remained confidential for a long time. Since the end of the 90s, it has enjoyed an important critical review, earning it recognition from institutions and also from the market. The Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris devoted a retrospective to it in 2022.
Our 1961 design is in good condition. Although it seems to be the exact opposite of his practice as a painter, constantly returning to the material, Leroy's drawings, which like this one are barely supported, pursue the same idea: to let the figure, the subject glimpse.
