Frederic Benrath, a post-war painter associated with the Lyrical Abstraction movement, trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. A great admirer of German Romanticism, he drew inspiration from it for his reflections on landscape. Early in his career, he met Henri Michaux and René Char, who became pillars of support for him. His fluid, almost cloud-like technique of the 1960s gradually thickened; the gestural style of his early work gave way to a focus on texture, eventually becoming more substantial during the 1980s, bordering on Expressionism.
